Guest Speaker: Andy Plummer

Andy Plummer is a highly influential golf instructor best known for co-developing the Stack and Tilt swing model, a system that challenged conventional golf instruction and attracted attention across the PGA Tour. Over the course of his career, Plummer has coached numerous PGA Tour players, including Charlie Wi, Steve Elkington, Tom Scherrer, Grant Waite, Troy Matteson, Bill Lunde, Mike Weir, and Aaron Baddeley, among others.[1][2]
Plummer began his professional journey competing on the mini tours during the mid-1990s. Moving into full-time instruction in the early 2000s, he honed his understanding of swing mechanics through extensive study with respected teachers such as Larry Bartosek, Tom Tomasello, Mike Bender, and Mac O’Grady.[7]
The Stack and Tilt Swing — Plummer’s Signature Contribution
Alongside Peter Morrice and collaborator Mike Bennett, Plummer co-authored The Stack and Tilt Swing (ISBN 978-1-592-40447-6), which outlines the system he helped create. The Stack and Tilt model emphasizes:
● Maintaining forward pressure and keeping weight forward throughout the swing
● Straightening the trail leg during the backswing
● Using a steep shoulder turn to stabilize the swing axis
These concepts reflect principles also found in Homer Kelley’s The Golfing Machine.[6]
The name “Stack and Tilt” describes how the spine and body align throughout the swing to keep the golfer’s upper-body center stable—an idea that emerged with input from Charlie Wi.[7] The method’s central premise—starting with weight forward (for right-handed players) and increasing that pressure during the swing—runs counter to much of mainstream golf teaching.[8] However, elements of the approach have been adopted or echoed by prominent instructors like Sean Foley.[9]
Influence and Reception
Plummer’s work gained broad public attention following a major golf magazine’s feature in June 2007,[10] which brought Stack and Tilt into widespread discussion among players, coaches, and media. Since then, Plummer has remained a recognized figure in modern swing theory, praised by some for his clarity and biomechanics-driven approach and debated by others for challenging traditional instruction.
