Sutton Qualifies for John Deere Classic Open Qualifier

Coal Valley, IL – Davis Sutton of Cedar Rapids Country Club and Chad Proehl of Sugar Creek Municipal Golf Course tied for first place at the Mizuno 36-Hole Classic at Oakwood Country Club on Monday. The final round of the event was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The winner of the Mizuno 36-Hole Classic automatically qualifies for the John Deere Classic Open Qualifier. Proehl had previously earned this exemption due to his third place at the 2018 Iowa PGA Professional Championship. Sutton will join Proehl and Sean McCarty at the John Deere Classic Open Qualifier on July 8 at the Pinnacle Country Club.

Sutton’s first round featured five birdies, including two-in-a-row on Nos. 7 and 8 and on Nos. 14-15. Sutton also carded two bogeys for a 3-under-par 68 in route to his first victory of the season.  

Proehl carded four birdies in his first round, including two-in-a-row on Nos. 6 and 7. The 2018 Iowa PGA Senior Player of the year bogeyed the par-5 15th hole to record a 3-under-par 68. Proehl was also the winner of the Senior Division. This event marks Proehl’s first win the Open Division and second win in the Senior Division in 2019.

Jeff Smith of Harvest Point Golf Course recorded his first win in the Super Senior Division with 1-over-par 72 in the first round of the Mizuno 36-Hole Classic. Smith carded four birdies in his round.
