Schmid, Gibb & Proehl make Cut at the 31st Senior PGA Professional Championship
Riverside, Iowa – Round two is complete at the 31st Senior PGA Professional Championship at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas.
Jeff Schmid of the Brown Deer Golf Club shot a one-over par round of 73 on the Par 72 Fazio Foothills Course (FF) that places him in tie for 31st place. His round included a front nine two under par 34 with three birdies and one bogey. Schmid’s back-nine included a lone birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey. Schmid plays the FF Course in Saturday’s third round off the #10 tee at 1:10 pm.
Judd Gibb of the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course fired a five-over par round of 75 on the Coore Crenshaw Course (CC) that places him in a tie for 63rd place after round two. Gibb’s round included one birdie and six bogeys. Gibb tees off the #1 tee at 8:00 am on Saturday.
Chad Proehl of the Sugar Creek Municipal Golf Course played a round of one-over par round of 73 on the FF course and currently in a tie for 63rd place. His front nine was a spectacular four-under par 32 that included four birdies. His back nine included one birdie but back-to-back double bogeys on holes 17 and 18. Proehl plays the FF Course on Saturday off the #10 tee at 8:20 am.
Curt Schnell of Okoboji View Golf Course played the FF Course and fired a round of two-over par 72. His round included two birdies and four bogeys. Schnell concludes his Championship with rounds of 74-72=148 for a six-over par total.
Joe Butler of the Burlington Golf Club fired a round of three-over par round of 73 on the CC Course. Butler’s round ended with three consecutive birdies on holes 16, 17 and 18. Butler finished the Championship with rounds of 78-73=151 for a nine-over par total.
Jim Henry from EK Golf shot a seven-over par round of 77 on the CC Course. Henry finished the Championship with rounds of 78-77=155 for a thirteen-over par total.
Paul Del Vecchio, coach at Augustana College, came back today to shoot a fine even-par round of 72 on the FF Course. Del Vecchio made five birdies and five bogeys in his second round. Del Vecchio finished his Championship with rounds of 84-72=156 for a fourteen-over par total.
After today’s second round the field was cut to the low 90 and ties and that number was two-over 144. Following Saturday’s third round the field will be cut to the low 70 and ties.
A full field of 264 players will compete in the National Championship with several key exemptions at stake. The low 35 scorers will earn a berth into the 2020 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Michigan, May 19-24. The top five finishers will earn an exemption into the final stage of the 2019 PGA Tour Champions National Finals. Those that finish in the top eight, including ties, will automatically qualify for next year’s Championship, to be held October 15-18, 2020 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Proehl and Schmid gained exemptions via their finishes in the 30th Senior PGA Professional Championship. Gibb, Del Vecchio, Schnell and Henry finished inside the top six at the 2019 Iowa Senior PGA Professional Championship. Butler finished seventh at this year’s Championship and advanced into the 31st Senior PGA Professional Championship as Iowa’s first alternate.
