Schall, Nitzschke-Henrich, Haverland Win Iowa PGA Awards

Schall Wins Teacher of the Year
Riverside, Iowa – Ken Schall of the Ken Schall Golf Performance Studio has been named the Teacher of the Year by the Iowa PGA. marks the second year in a row that Schall has won this award.  This honor is based on a professional’s entire record achievements over their career. The award is determined based off the nominee’s overall impact in teaching at nominee’s facility, unusual, innovative, or special teaching programs initiated or implemented, instructional articles, videos or publications written or produced, list of outstanding golfers whom the nominee has instructed, involvement in junior golf activities and in the community and innovative contributions.

“I’m honored to be selected as the Iowa PGA Teacher of the Year for the second straight year,” said Schall. “Teaching the game has always been my passion and to be selected by my peers is especially gratifying. The success of my students is what drives me. I love helping golfers who have a passion for the game and are willing to work at it, whether they are beginners or elite players.” 

Schall’s passion for teaching the game of golf has continued to grow each year he has been in this profession. He is on track to give over 1,400 individual lessons this year. Schall has a profound interest in developing young players. His resume of players speaks to his ability to bring the best out young golfers. 

Schall has taught the likes of Broc Everrett and Britta Snyder. Everrett became the second golfer in Iowa history to win the Division I NCAA Championship earlier this year. Synder is a two-time AJGA winner and won the 2017 Iowa Women’s State Amateur at age 15 by 13 shots. Synder has also competed in the last two USGA Girls Junior Championships. 

In addition to Schall’s national successful students, he has also seen great success out of his students locally in Iowa. Six of his 2018 high school students will be playing college golf in the fall. Lucas Scherf, the 2018 3A high school Boys Individual Champion, is attending Drake University, Brooke Boardman, the 2018 4A high school Girls Individual Champion, has committed to the University of Kansas and Tommy Doyle, the 2017 3A high school Boys Individual Champion will be playing golf for the University of Northern Iowa in the fall. 

Schall also teaches some of the most successful players on the Iowa PGA Junior Tour. Five of his students (Rylee Heryford, Taylor Sedivec, Paige Hoffman, Will Simpson and Kolby Shackelford) won Player of the Year honors in 2017. Hoffman and Heryford also won Player of the Year for their age divisions in 2018, and Hoffman has won the honor five years in-a-row, winning all 15 of her events in 2018. 

Ken has displayed what it takes to be a successful teacher for all ages and playing abilities. His dedication to help players grow in golf is evident on his long resume of players. The Iowa PGA is proud to announce Ken Schall the Iowa PGA Teacher of the Year for the second straight season.

Nitzschke-Henrich Win Youth Player Development Award
Riverside, Iowa – Carol Nitzschke-Henrich of the Warrior Run Golf Course has been named the 2018 Iowa PGA Youth Player Development honoree. This honor is based on the Professional’s entire record, with emphasis placed on his/her performance and achievements over the past two years. The honoree should also promote junior golf throughout the Section.  

“It is an honor to receive this award for working with our youth and growing this game because it is one of the most rewarding parts of my job,” said Nitzchke-Henrich. “I look forward to my students achieving great things in golf in the future.”

Nitzschke-Henrich has been highly involved in junior golf for her entire career as a Professional. Working with the youth has been a high priority of hers since becoming a Professional. Nitzschke-Henrich has held Iowa PGA Junior and Pee Wee events at Warrior Run for the last four years. In 2017 she hosted the Warrior Run Junior and Pee Wee in June and Junior and Pee Wee Tour Metro Classic in September. She also the Warrior Run Junior and Pee Wee again in 2018. 

In addition to the tournaments Nitzschke-Henrich has hosted, she has also hosted several Drive, Chip and Putt events at her facility, including the Sub-Regional Qualifier. In 2017, she started a PGA Jr. League team for the Norwalk area and continued that team into 2018.   

Each year Nitzschke-Henrich works with two high school girls golf teams at Warrior Run. In 2017, she asked to instruct at a clinic for area high school girls at the Solheim Cup. In 2017, Nitzschke-Henrich paired her Junior Golf Program at Warrior Run with The First Tee of Central Iowa. In the first year the program grew from 36 participates to 87 and has reached 164 juniors in 2018.  

Nitzschke-Henrich is always striving to better herself as a teacher and learn new ways to connect with her students. She became a US Kids Certified Coach this year and has seen two of her PGA Jr. League Players play on the All Start Team and compete in Post Season Matches each of the last two years. 

Working with juniors can be very hectic, but very rewarding. Nitzschke-Henrich has shown what it takes to grow the game as well as her students and the Iowa PGA is very excited to name her the Youth Player Development honoree.

Haverland Wins Player Development Award
Riverside, Iowa – Butch Haverland of TPC Deere Run has be named the 2018 Iowa PGA Player Development honoree. The Player Development Award is designed to recognize a PGA Professional for extraordinary and exemplary contributions and achievements in the area of player development. This award considers the PGA Professional’s growth of the game leadership commitment at the Section and National levels and the impact made at their facility. 

“Winning this award has been an enlightening experience,” said Haverland. “I’ve received plenty congratulatory calls, emails and texts and I greatly appreciate everything. Whether it’s a brand-new golfer at a young age or a much older adult, it’s all the same. It’s my job to help them through the process and learn the game.”

Haverland has worked in the golf business for the past 35 years, spending the last three with TPC Deere Run in the Director of Instruction position. He has been instructing golf since 1989. He currently teaches an adult program of 35 golfers, 18 high school golfers, five junior golfers 10 years old and younger and 12 TPC Deere Run Members. He also coaches two PGA Jr. League teams, both of which won their league this year.  

Haverland has grown his program from scratch, staring to 2016 to reaching hundreds of golfers in 2018. His is devoted to the progression of his diverse clientele ranging from junior golfers to women to high school and collegiate players to Professionals.
In addition to his lessons and clinics, Haverland is the Assistant Golf Coach for Blackhawk College where he helps with the development of the 12 players on the team. He is expected to take over as head coach in the spring of 2019. 

Butch’s passion and dedication to his players is evident in the amount of time and effort he puts in to lessons and clinics. He has proven what it takes to be a great teaching professional in this industry and the Iowa PGA is proud to announce him as the 2018 Player Development honoree.
