AMANA, Iowa – The Inaugural Iowa PGA Women’s Professional Championship had quite the finish Monday afternoon between champion Sarah Bidney (+7) and runner-up Sherry Newsome (+8) at Amana Colonies Golf Club.

On the front nine, Wakonda Club’s Bidney was up a stroke firing a 3-over par 39 with three bogeys, mean while Newsome of Indian Creek Country Club carded a 4-over par 40 to stay in contention. Bidney’s lead grew when Newsome triple bogeyed hole-11 but the race for the championship was nowhere near over.

Bidney held a three-stroke lead heading to the 18th hole with 1st Place on her mind. Bidney eventually bogeyed the hole while Newsome put another circled three, birdie on her card. Newsome recorded the most birdies (3) from the featured group but Bidney held her off by one to claim the championship shooting a 7-over par 79.

“It was all of the great Iowa PGA Women that sparked the conversation with Tess Goudy and Erin Strieck of holding the first Iowa PGA Women’s Professional Championship”, Executive Director Greg Mason said. “I’d like to thank those three and Sherry for playing in the first Iowa PGA Women’s Professional Championship. She’ll always be known as the first champion.”
