Gibb in a Tie for 6th Place at the 31st Senior PGA Professional Championship
Riverside, Iowa – Round one is complete at the 31st Senior PGA Professional Championship at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas
Judd Gibb of the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course fired a four-under par round of 69 on the Fazio Foothills Course that places him in a tie for 6th place after round one. He started out with birdies on his first two holes of the Championship before bogeying the Par 4 5th Hole. Gibb then birdied holes #10, #11 and #12 before making six straight pars to end his round. “I’m no golf expert, but I made a few putts today, remarked Gibb, I played early before the wind picked up and the air heated up.” Gibb plays the Coore Crenshaw Course (CC) on Friday off the #10 tee at 12:57 pm.
Jeff Schmid of the Brown Deer Golf Club shot a three-under par 67 on the Par 70 Coore Crenshaw Course (CC) that places him in tie for 13th place. His round was highlighted by an eagle 2 on the Par 4 first hole when he holed a lob wedge from 80 yards right into the hole. He combined that eagle with two bogeys and three birdies. Schmid plays the FF Course on Friday off the #1 tee at 1:33 pm.
Chad Proehl of the Sugar Creek Municipal Golf Course played a two-over par round of 72 on the CC course. His round included one lone birdie and three bogeys. Proehl plays the FF Course on Friday off the #10 tee at 1:51 pm.
Curt Schnell of Okoboji View Golf Course played the CC Course and fired a round of four-over par 74. His round included an eagle, two birdies, six bogeys and one double bogey. Schnell tees off at 8:54 am off of the #10 tee on the FF Course.
Jim Henry from EK Golf shot a six-over par round of 78 on the FF Course. His round included two birdies and eight bogeys. Henry will play the CC Course off the #1 tee at 12:57 pm.
Joe Butler of the Burlington Golf Club fired a round of six-over par round of 78 on the FF Course. Butler’s round included one birdie, four bogeys and one triple bogey. His Championship continues at 8:18 am on Friday off the #1 tee on the CC Course.
Paul Del Vecchio, coach at Augustana College, shot a fourteen over par round of 84. He continues play at 8:27 am off the #10 tee on the FF Course.
After today’s second round the field will be cut to the low 90 and ties. Following Saturday’s third round the field will be cut to the low 70 and ties.
A full field of 264 players will compete in the National Championship with several key exemptions at stake. The low 35 scorers will earn a berth into the 2020 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Michigan, May 19-24. The top five finishers will earn an exemption into the final stage of the 2019 PGA Tour Champions National Finals. Those that finish in the top eight, including ties, will automatically qualify for next year’s Championship, to be held October 15-18, 2020 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Proehl and Schmid gained exemptions via their finishes in the 30th Senior PGA Professional Championship. Gibb, Del Vecchio, Schnell and Henry finished inside the top six at the 2019 Iowa Senior PGA Professional Championship. Butler finished seventh at this year’s Championship and advanced into the 31st Senior PGA Professional Championship as Iowa’s first alternate.
