6 Iowa PGA Professionals Set for PGA Professional Championship

Round 1 & 2 Pairings

Bluffton, South Carolina – Iowa PGA members, John Bermel, Darin Fisher, Judd Gibb, Sean McCarty, Chad Proehl and Jeff Schmid will compete in the PGA Professional Championship at Belfair Golf Club (East and West Courses) in Bluffton, South Carolina on April 28 – May 1.

The 2019 PGA Professional Championship presented by Club Car and OMEGA features 312 PGA Professionals competing in a four-day stroke play event on two different courses (East and West). The field will compete on each course, once in the first two rounds, with the final two rounds contested on the West Course. Following the first 36 holes of play, the field will be reduced to the low 90 and ties.

The total purse of the 2019 PGA Professional Championship comes out too $550,000. In addition to the purse, the 2019 PGA Professional Champion receives exemption into the 2019 PGA Championship, the 2019 PGA Cup and six PGA Tour events over a 12-month period. The top 20 finishers will earn an exemption into the 2019 PGA Championship as well.

“The tournament is a little earlier this year, so we had to get our games ready quicker,” said Fisher. “It’s a competitive event with 300 of the best players in the country. You have to be ready to play and something that I’m super excited about and that I look forward to every year. It seems like the golf courses are great and I think it will be a great challenge.”

Player Notes: Returns to the PGA Professional Championship for the 5th time in 6 years…Former assistant men’s golf coach at the University of Iowa…from 1991-2008 his playing career included tours in Asia, South America, and Canada as well as tournaments throughout the United States including on the PGA TOUR and Web.com…Winner, 2016 Gateway PGA Professional Championship; 2015 Event No. 4 of the PGA Tournament Series (in 9-hole playoff over Adam Rainaud); 2013 Gateway PGA Championship; 2012 Gateway PGA Assistants Championship…served as volunteer assistant coach for the University of Missouri men’s team in 2013, for the Tigers’ women’s program in 2015 and 2016, and for the Stetson (Fla.) “I’m really looking forward to this week,” said Schmid. “It’s a long shot to make it to the PGA Championship, but it would be cool for me especially because I’m playing in the Senior PGA Championship this year and I can have a nice run of three out of four weeks playing in a couple big tournaments early in the year. Unfortunately, I haven’t been playing much this early in the year, but I’m going to get down early and practice. Hopefully I’ll play well and help prepare myself for the Senior PGA Championship in a couple weeks.”
